America is known for the land of opportunity. The land where the “American Dream” is revered and honored. I am certainly grateful for the opportunities in America, but there’s one aspect of the American Dream that just doesn’t resonate with me.
Do you know what most kids are learning from their parents and schools these days? They’re taught that they should stay in school for about 20 to 22 years. Study hard. Find a good career. They’re encouraged to go get it 9 to 5 salaried job and start saving for retirement. Actually, the majority are not taught to save for retirement. Many never see their parents saving; they only see their family living paycheck-to-paycheck and in debt up to their ears.
But let’s just say there are some that are encouraged to begin putting money in a 401k and perhaps even making a small investment in the market. They’re encouraged to work until they’re maybe 65 to 70, trading most of their hours for dollars.
Brief retirement years
But there’s something about this picture that doesn’t sit well with me. Based upon this model, the American Dream allows for maybe the last 20% of your life feeling complete freedom. The retirement years. Those years when most people are dealing with some aches and pains, perhaps an illness, and just plain immobility.
But why do we have to wait until we’re 65 or 70 to really enjoy the American Dream without the stress of work? Why can’t this model be changed and we can retire, say by 40 or 45? And then, have 30, 40, or 50 years of feeling free? Being free?
Early retirement is possible
I believe we can, and it starts with teaching the youth and adults that it’s possible. That they don’t have to toil decade after decade, yearning for that one day when they can finally wake up in the morning, have their coffee, and get to fully experience letting go and relaxing.
You wonder, “But how is this possible?” It’s not as challenging as you think. Although there are various ways, the most basic ways are to live frugally, start saving 40 to 50% of your income, learn about passive income streams, like real estate, and hop on board that real estate investment train.
Real estate investing is for everyone
This kind of lifestyle isn’t just for a certain niche, status, or class. Becoming financially free at an earlier age is possible for anyone. But it will require retraining the brain, and aligning with a wealthy mindset. By wealthy, I’m not just talking about money. I mean wealthy in the terms of abundance in every area of your life: Emotionally, socially, physically, and financially.
If you haven’t read the book, Set for Life, by Scott Trench, I encourage you to do so. You’ll gain some excellent wisdom in how you can begin envisioning your early retirement, and taking the steps to do so.
This isn’t hype, and this isn’t me living in some alternate reality. I’ve experienced this, and I’ve had students start from ground zero and build their retirement nest egg in five to ten years. They began entertaining the thought, “Hey, I don’t have to go the traditional route. There’s a better way.” They started learning about passive income streams, and creating goals to line up with their vision to set themselves up for financial freedom EARLY in life. Do they all retire early? No. Some really love what they do, so they continue doing what they love, but they don’t have to from the financial aspect. They want to!
