“You are what you think.” Surely, you’ve heard that phrase before, and for the most part, it holds true. People’s thoughts, attitude and philosophies profoundly affect their beliefs and life choices. Now thoughts don’t always control our lives, which I think we can all be grateful for – especially when we are having the kind of days where we’re struggling.
However, we must learn to control our thoughts and beliefs as best as we can, setting the tone on how we look at relationships, careers and even our finances.
When it comes to money and wealth, many people grew up hearing certain statements and beliefs, such as:
- Money does not grow on trees.
- Money is the root of all evil.
- The rich get richer, while the poor get poorer.
Perhaps you witnessed your parents struggle financially and grew to believe everyone has money problems. These beliefs can become excuses, and excuses can cause one to lose power and influence over their lives. These beliefs can block growth and ultimately, wealth levels.
Reprogram Your Thought Life
If you’re not experiencing wealth, you may have some inner beliefs blocking your wealth. If so, it’s important to reprogram your thoughts and beliefs, and take control of your financial success. You can begin by writing down the negative thoughts you have concerning money and your finances. Try to recall how you first came to believe these negative ideas. Did they come from your childhood, witnessing the struggles of your parents? Or from friends who share the same beliefs? A religious background?
It’s time to reprogram those thoughts and start forming positive beliefs concerning money. Turn those negative thoughts into positive ones. For example:
- Money is the root of evil – No, money is not the root of evil. I think someone got that mixed up with greed because greed can certainly turn good people into evil monsters. Money is important in that our world operates with money as currency, and currency is necessary to afford you a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, and so on. Money enables you to provide for you and your family and frees you up to live the kind of life you truly desire.
- Money does not grow on trees – Although money actually does not grow on trees, take a different approach to this belief. Imagine yourself as a seed. What is your goal? What do you want to financially ‘grow’ into? When these ideals are planted in a solid foundation (your attitude and mindset), your seed (goal) will begin to take root. Consider your knowledge as the sunshine that helps your money grow. Learn from your mistakes and do not be afraid to learn from others. The water is your money, begin to invest more water (money) into your tree and watch it grow.
- The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer – There are individuals who were born into money and seem to accumulate more as time goes on, making it seem like the rich get richer. Yet others achieve great wealth by earning and investing their money wisely, oftentimes in real estate. The rich get richer for various reasons, but also because their beliefs are not blocking their wealth. They believe they can be wealthy and go after it. They put the time in and make wise investments. The poor can do the same thing, first dealing with any beliefs that are blocking their wealth mindset. Those who consider themselves poor often do nothing to change their situation, thus, they don’t increase their wealth situation.
Remember, you are responsible for your financial reality. Do you have some inner beliefs that might be blocking your flow of money? If so, take that first step in purposefully empowering your money beliefs. Re-program your thoughts to align with abundance. Believe in, “You are what you think” and begin thinking you are financially growing and meeting your money goals. And, just watch, over time you’ll begin seeing some change for the better.
