Regardless of what type of business you have, knowing your mission inside and out can give you the drive that helps you create a successful business. Many people who go into business for themselves don’t really have a “why” at the core of their business. Deep down, they’re not clear on why they want to launch out in a business venture, and that uncertainty can affect them down the road.
There’s a reason successful businesses take the time before starting their business to define their mission and vision. To simply state something like, “I want to make a lot of money” will only take you so far in your business. You’ll become accustomed to chasing money, and that can cause you to become quite frustrated when things aren’t going as well as you wish.
How to define your values
You’d be surprised how many people don’t know how to answer this question:
What are your core values?
If that’s you, don’t fret. If you haven’t taken time to really think about this, you can today.
Now let’s start with the questions: What are values? Why are they important?
Core values are your beliefs. They are the things that are most important to you or the things you’re most passionate about. For example, you could be passionate about qualities like dependability, honesty, or commitment. You may hold the belief that everyone ought to have the right to live a life with enough resources for a good life. You may value building a strong community or helping the less fortunate. There are hundreds of things that you can value. Begin jotting down what it is you feel you value MOST.
Define your mission
Look at your value list and narrow them down to the things you value the absolute most in life. Now, it’s time to take those values and define your mission. For example, let’s say one of your greatest values is family. You love to take care of them on all levels. So, when you sit down to create your mission statement, you’ll want to write that one of your missions is to build wealth so that your children will be blessed when you pass on. This is important to you – it’s one of your “whys”.
Try not to be so concerned about whether or not you’re doing this “right”. It’s not necessarily about right or wrong; it’s about opening the energy for opportunities and abundance as you focus your energy on your life mission. And, you can always tweak this mission statement down the road. For now, simply write a paragraph that defines your values and what you aim to accomplish in your business and/or your personal life.
Set goals
Once you get clear about your mission, it’s time to create goals and a strategic plan to accomplish those goals. Do you know that those who write down their goals have a significantly better chance at accomplishing them than those who don’t?
It’s true. Writing down your goals and creating an action plan are powerful ways to manifest the kind of life you want.
Staying aligned with your mission
There’s the temptation to throw the mission statement to the side and spend a lot of time and energy just chasing the money. Don’t get me wrong; money is a valuable commodity, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting a lot of it. But if you forget about your core values and life mission, eventually you’ll grow weary and feel a bit of a void.
In fact, studies have been done on lottery winners who thought they would be so happy if they only had a boatload of money. Turns out though, that those winners who were unhappy before the big win stayed unhappy despite the money. Sure, they experienced a temporary “money high”, but once that faded, they returned to their accustomed internal unhappy state.
It’s easy to get distracted, so keep your mission statement somewhere you’ll see it often. Stay aligned with your “why” and your mission, as this will drive your business and you’ll be more aligned with your authentic self. And that, my friends, will make for a happier, more successful life.
