self disciplineWhen working toward goals or striving for success in any endeavor of our life, be it business or personal related, self-discipline is a vital quality we all need to have. What vision comes to your mind when you think of the word self-discipline? Is it sacrifice, difficulty, or strain? If so, I want to help you retrain your brain. Here are three simple ways to avoid the trauma that you may be associating with self-discipline.

  1. Change Your View of Discipline. One reason you may not have self-discipline is that you view the activities or tasks you need to do as unpleasant. What happens when we think that way is those activities are pushed aside until we absolutely HAVE to do them, and it becomes drudgery. Instead, pump yourself up and get motivated to get them done as soon as possible. Look forward to the challenge and keep affirming how great you’ll feel when you’re finished. Focus on the sense of personal accomplishment you’ll gain with every task and you’ll be much more likely to stick to your plans.
  1. Gradually Increase Your Self-Discipline. Rather than putting together a huge list of tasks or activities for you to tackle, identify only your top three. Make it something fairly easy to accomplish, and make sure you do it. If possible, get one task out of the way first thing in the morning before you do anything else. Make it your highest priority and it will soon become a solid habit, making it much easier to accomplish your second, then your third task. Then, day by day, week by week, begin adding more tasks or activities – or increase the size or frequency of the original tasks so you’re doing more each day. Eventually, you’ll find you’re doing the things you set out to do without excuses or procrastination. William James, one of the founders of modern psychology once said, “Procrastination is attitude’s natural assassin. There’s nothing so fatiguing as an uncompleted task.”
  1. Commit to Self-Discipline. The late, great Jim Rohn would say, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” Are you fully committed to achieving your goals? Then you are automatically committing to self-discipline. Make a sincere promise to yourself that you will do what it takes to work on your goals every single day. Write a list of important action steps and make it your mission to do one or more of them each day. Re-commit yourself as often as necessary to make sure you stick to your plans. Choose to be self-disciplined, choose to be successful – and you will be! – Also, choose to come to our upcoming live training this July in New Jersey.
